Giants
of the Ash
Brendan Fullam
“This
is an extraordinary book by any standards, in that it records
for posterity the hopes and aspirations and personal motivations
of the hurling giants from each decade who have, between them,
elevated Ireland’s finest field games to being one of the
world’s greatest sporting spectacles.”
- Séan O Síochain, former General Secretary of the
GAA
“A
great hurling book, Giants of the Ash has the nation’s history
woven into it. Conversations courses through the pages as it flows
through the living body of the game.”
- The Irish Times
“Giants
of the Ash by Brendan Fullam is the first in-depth study of the
outstanding hurlers of the century. Seventy-nine of the greatest
players including Christy Ring, Peter Cregan, John and Michael
Maher, the Rackards and the oldest among them, John T Power.”
“As
you open the pages, you will hear again the roar of the crowds
in Croke Park, the whirr of the flying slíotar and the
unmistakable and unique sound of ash against ash.”
Author
Brendan Fullam, who intends this as a first volume in an ongoing
series, has interviewed these Giants of the Ash and their
colleagues over the past fifteen years, and presents his text
with contributions from the players themselves, with their photographs
and signatures, and with their ideal team selections.
Every
great game creates its heroes. These are the people whose skills,
and stamina and achievements win them stardom, and who, in turn,
make the game great. So it is too with the game of hurling –
an Irish sport played by legendary heroes in ancient days and
by modern sportsmen who have become legends in their own time.
Each
generation produces its greatest players, and for sports lovers
everywhere Giants of the Ash portrays the stars of hurling
from the turn of the century to the modern game, recording their
views and comments on the matches they played, on their fellow
sportsmen and on changes and developments in the game itself.
In
addition, the book includes many action pictures of games in recent
years featuring many of the modern players. The first in Brendan
Fullam’s classic trilogy on hurling and possibly his greatest!
